Annual. An absolute must for herb gardens! Also called Japanese basil or beefsteak plant, shiso’s incredible flavor can be described as a combination of cinnamon, mint, and clove with overtones of cumin. A beautiful, heat- and drought-tolerant bedding plant, and excellent for containers. This packet provides 75% green shiso, and 25% red. Perennial in USDA zones 10 and warmer; usually grown as an annual. Deer resistant.

When to sow outside: 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost and when temperatures are warm.

When to start inside: 4 weeks before average last frost.

Special Germination Instructions: Store seeds in refrigerator prior to sowing. Soaking seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours prior to sowing hastens germination. Light required for germination; press seeds into surface; do not cover.

Harvesting: Harvest leaves any time after plant is a few inches tall, but before it flowers. Once plant flowers, the leaves drop.
